The Beach at Sainte-Adresse
Artist: Claude Monet
Dated: 1867
Claude Monet (1840 –1926) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy.
In the summer of 1867 he stayed in Sainte-Adresse, in Normandy, near where he grew up. He began the painting this view of sailboats and local fishermen outdoors on an overcast day but very probably reworked it in his studio. It was first shown at the Impressionist exhibition of 1876, the second year of independent exhibitions organised with other avant-garde artists who wanted to avoid the very formal and strict “Salon” exhibitions.
