Still life with Five Flasks
Artist: Vincent van Gogh
Dated: 1884
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a post-impressionist Dutch artist, and subsequently one of the most famous and influential artists in all of Western art. In a ten-year period he created over 2000 artistic works – including more than 850 oil paintings. His distinctive style of strong brushwork and bright colours is instantly recognisable whether it be in his landscapes, portraits or self-portraits. He committed suicide after a psychotic episode in 1890. He was not successful either artistically or financially in his own lifetime, often seen as a mad man, however now he is considered to be a misunderstood genius and his paintings are some of the most expensive ever sold with his “Verger avec Chypres” sold in 2022 in New York for the staggering price of just over £117million !
