Georges Braque (1882 – 1963) was a French painter and sculptor known for co-founding Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso. He initially pursued a career in painting, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early works were influenced by Impressionism and the bright colours of Fauvism before his revolutionary collaboration with Picasso, which redefined the boundaries of visual representation. Braque’s Cubist paintings were characterized by fragmented forms and the use of multiple perspectives in order to challenge traditional notions of space and time.
Throughout his career, he continually pushed the boundaries of artistic expression, experimenting with different techniques and mediums, including collage and sculpture. Despite suffering a severe head injury during World War I, he continued to produce ground-breaking works that left an indelible mark on the art world. Braque’s legacy extends beyond Cubism, as he also made significant contributions to other artistic movements such as Fauvism and Surrealism. His innovative approach to composition and form continues to inspire artists and scholars alike, cementing his place as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
